Library Aide-Circulation Clerk
Primary Function:
Performs a variety of library circulation and clerical procedures with a heavy concentration of public contact. The Circulation Desk is one of the busiest parts of the library and is often the first or only point of interaction that many patrons have with library employees. First impressions are important, so we must always try to be pleasant, helpful, and professional while working the desk.
Specific Duties:
● Performs all circulation desk duties.
o Checks materials in/out/renew materials, and sorts returned materials onto the carts as soon as possible. Checks book drops several times during work shift.
o Reserves materials, to include calling patrons when book arrives and getting ILLs completed.
o Collects fines.
o Tallies reference questions daily.
o Issues new patron cards/updates cards/ temporary cards
● Performs all opening/closing procedures in work areas/public areas.
o Turns on/off all computers/copiers/printers.
o Empties book drops.
o Turns on/off lights.
o Walks through the entire building, to include bathrooms, alternating the duty with other staff members on the circulation desk.
● Notifies patrons about hold items when they arrive.
● Answers phone and routes calls as necessary.
● Performs basic reference work or refers it to the librarian in charge.
● Assists patrons in locating materials through the Spark or ILL
● Obtains mail; sends mail; delivers/picks up interdepartmental mail/delivers mail to the correct person.
● Obtains newspapers from the front entrance.
● Processes magazines for circulation
● Assists with library programs and displays, registration, signs, crafts, book lists, etc.
● Assists with covering books every day as needed.
● Repairs books or sends them to the “book hospital” to be repaired.
● Clears desk area of all books, papers, office equipment, etc. before leaving for the day.
● Reads shelves.
● Completes any other tasks assigned by a department head during work shift.
● Prioritizes tasks within work assignment.
● Greets visitors to the library before they reach the desk. It’s as simple as “hello” when they are close enough to hear you.
● Assists library patrons in use of materials.
● Responds to requests for information and assistance, or refers inquiries to an appropriate staff member.
● Charges and discharges library books, materials, and equipment.
● Inspects returned books, materials and equipment for damage or bugs.
Checks all donated items for damage or bugs.
● Follows prescribed routine in receiving compensation for overdue, damaged or lost library items.
● Sorts and shelves books and periodicals.
● Assists persons in applying for library membership, printing, faxing.
● Processes membership applications.
● Enters and retrieves member and circulation information by computer terminal in a computerized circulation system.
● Prepares materials to promote use of the library.
● Types signs, lists, reports, and other information; prints and/or laminates if required.
● Reports specialty work accomplished to supervisor.
Additional Duties:
● Monitors reading rooms and areas to assure an adequate reading environment.
● Alerts Manager to any maintenance issues.
● Relieves other employees as directed by the Director.
● Takes trash dumpsters, recycling dumpsters, and large trash items out on correct days.

Qualifications:
1. At least 1 year of library experience is a plus.
2. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
3. Ability to cooperate and communicate effectively with others.
4. Highschool diploma or equivalent required. College credit is a plus.
5. Computer experience is important, including the ability to learn circulation desk software, and ability to help patrons with word processing, email, e-books, and other computer functions.

● While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods of time and should be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
● The employee frequently is required to sit and reach, stand, bend over and must be able to move around the work environment.
● The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
● Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
● The noise level in the work environment is usually low.
Part-Time, Exempt Position. Rate of pay dependent on experience and education. The minimum pay rate is $13.00, with additional compensation to be competitive and commensurate with education and experience.
